The Harbuck Scholarship reading and reception & Joshilyn Jackson campus visit
The 2016 Harbuck Scholarship Award Reading and Reception will be held Friday, September 16, at 7 p.m. in IT 1005.
Final judge Joshilyn Jackson chose Rebecca Frost as the winner of this year’s Harbuck Scholarship Award. Aleyna Rentz, Brandi Hannah and Michael Malmberg were finalists. The Harbuck Committee, consisting of Professors Christina Olson, Jared Yates Sexton, and Laura Valeri, stated that the thirteen entries showcased an amazing range of talents.
The Harbuck Scholarship honors Ally Harbuck, a free-spirited creative writing major from Savannah who died in a traffic accident in 2005 at the age of nineteen, one week before the end of her freshman year at Georgia Southern. She wrote for The George-Anne and was active in the Gay-Straight Alliance and the National Organization for Women on campus. Her parents, Debi and David Harbuck of Savannah, raised the funds to endow the scholarship.
New York Times-bestselling novelist Joshilyn Jackson is the author of seven novels and a novella: The Opposite of Everyone, Someone Else’s Love Story, Gods in Alabama, Between, Georgia, The Girl Who Stopped Swimming, Backseat Saints, A Grown-Up Kind of Pretty, and the novella My Own Miraculous. Her books have been translated into a dozen languages, won SIBA’s novel of the year, thrice been a #1 Book Sense Pick, twice won Georgia Author of the Year, and three times been shortlisted for the Townsend prize. She lives in Decatur. Jackson will give a reading from her work in conjunction with the award ceremony Thursday, September 15, at 7 p.m. in IT 1005.
All Harbuck events and readings are free and open to the public.
