The Averitt Center for the Arts Legends Gallery and the Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art are pleased to announce In the Spirit of Dada and Surrealism with an opening reception November 7, 2014 from 5 – 7 p.m.

In the Spirit of Dada and Surrealism is a group exhibition of students currently enrolled in Dr. Julie McGuire’s Dada and Surrealism art history course at Georgia Southern University.  Born in a Europe shattered by World War I, Dada and Surrealist artists sought to escape the traditional and rational in art and thought. And, just as their predecessors did, the student works on display in In the Spirit of Dada and Surrealism are similarly designed to amuse, annoy, bewilder, mystify, and inspire reflection.

Students were challenged to create as closely as possible a work of art by a Dada or Surrealist artist in order to fully understand the artwork and to inspire their own future creative endeavors. By connecting the great ideas of others (through initially copying), some of the greatest leaps of originality have occurred in the history of art.

Included in the exhibition are Delonoe Baker, Sara Campbell, Brandon Coe, Stephanie Conmy, Chloe Coulibaly, Anna Currence, Sarah Diller, Lauren-Ashley Evans, Eleanor Ferrara, Taylor Genereux, Kaylee Johnston, Erika Jordan, Ahmad Kromah, Kaitlyn Lewis, Honor Lind, Kristen Lynch, Danaris Madera, Jacquaya McKenzie, Stephen Mincey, Kristin Moore, Deidre Pugh, Kathryn Rakoczy, Kennedy Rousseau, Allyson Schuman, Emmitt Smith, Alexandra Tobia, Megan Uphaus, Brandon Warnock and Cierra Willingham.

For the first time, this biennial exhibition will be showcased off-campus at the Averitt Center for the Arts for the community to enjoy.  In the Spirit of Dada and Surrealism will be on display in the Legends Gallery until Friday, November 28.
