Nothing captures the Christmas spirit in New York City quite like the classic department store window displays.

After a successful inaugural year, the 5th Ave Christmas window display challenge returns this year featuring additional retail locations. The event was started by Frills’ by Scott owner Scott Marchbanks as a way for students to get “hands-on experience in their majors outside of the classroom and be recognized for their creative talents.” The competition drew attention from all that drove down Main Street, and this year, the Downtown Statesboro Development Authority (DSDA) has joined the 5th Ave Christmas team. With many merchants in the downtown area wishing to be a part of the event, the number of students needed for the challenge has risen drastically.

“We are honored that the DSDA has reached out to us and asked that our students take part in this event again this year,” said Outreach Coordinator Cinnamon Dowd. “For this year’s challenge we are looking 20 or more teams of students, and that truly shows how much the DSDA and downtown business value the creativity and talents of Georgia Southern students.”

This holiday season, Statesboro retailer Frills by Scott and the Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art are bringing a Fifth Avenue feel to the windows of the downtown Statesboro store.

The students will begin a 72-hour construction on December 4, and the windows will be revealed on December 6 at 6:30 p.m. during First Friday Downtown. People can vote starting December 7 for their favorite window by casting a ballot in-store or “liking” photos of the window designs on the Downtown Statesboro Development Authority page, facebook.com/DSDAStatesboro.

The winning team will be announced on December 20 and will receive holiday gift cards.
