My research includes

Current research includes an edition of four of Miguel de Cervantes’ Novelas ejemplares and an edition of Diego de San Pedro’s Cárcel de amor, in collaboration with José Manuel Hidalgo.

While my interests are wide ranging, they currently revolve around the following areas: cultural studies, comedia studies, and Don Quijote.  My approach to the texts is based upon a literary, historical, and critical framework.  I am particularly interested in what literature can teach us about society and issues relevant to it, such as power, the role of women, marginalized voices, and religion.  When I teach a course on the comedia, for example, I encourage my students to think critically about the characters and themes, and to apply this information to the socio-historic milieu of the playwright’s world.  In addition, I discuss the extra-literary circumstances surrounding the plays: playhouses, actors, staging, and economics.

Currently, I am the Interviews Editor for Comedia Performance, the journal of the Association for Hispanic Classical Theater.

I am a candidate for the permanent diaconate in the Diocese of Savannah. The five-year program includes an academic component that consists of coursework that leads to the M.A. degree in Pastoral Studies (St. Leo University).  Ordination is scheduled for May 2008.
