NINE-MONTH INTERNSHIPS

AT THE INSTITUTION SAINT-LOUIS, SAUMUR, FRANCE

FOR

GEORGIA SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY FRENCH STUDENTS

 


DUTIES

English teachers at Saint-Louis generally ask that their American assistants be able to lead conversation/discussion sessions, role play activities based on authentic materials (ads, fliers, etc.), and communicative games in English. They are also very interested in oral presentations on topics dealing with life in America and based on a variety of authentic documents, such as newspaper articles, brochures, radio shows, etc . . . The specific nature of the duties assigned to GSU interns at Saint-Louis is determined in consultation with each individual student selected for the program and may vary, depending on each intern's wishes and ability, and on the teacher(s) to whom they are assigned. These duties may also include other tasks, such as, for example, the preparation and recording of pedagogical materials. Of course, the interns' involvement with the local students and teachers may go beyond their work duties and include their participation in various activities sponsored either by the school or by local organizations.

Each intern is responsible for a maximum of 15 contact hours per week but his/her workload may vary from week to week, depending on the needs of the English teachers and their classes.

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must be very motivated French students enrolled in an upper-division course at the time of application and must have a very good academic record. They must show a strong commitment to the study of the French language and culture and be capable of adjusting smoothly to the French working and social environment.

TRAVEL AND LIVING EXPENSES

In exchange for their services, Saint-Louis provides GSU interns with room and board at no cost (included is a 497.21 € monthly stipend  ). Participants are housed at Saint-Louis. Each GSU intern has access to all Saint-Louis facilities, equipment and documents generally available to Saint-Louis students free of charge. Travel costs must be borne by the participants temselves. Participants should also make arrangements to have enough spending money.

INSURANCE

Georgia Southern University students going to Saint-Louis as interns must sign a Waiver of Liability and carry their own health insurance policy. They may be required to provide Georgia Southern University and the institution Saint-Louis with proof of health insurance (health/accident) valid during their stay in France.

REGISTRATION AND CREDITS

GSU students selected for participation in this program may enroll in Selected Topics, Directed Study in French, or Internship in France at Georgia Southern during their semester in France (3 semester credit hours per course for a maximum of 6 credit hours). A maximum of 6 hours of credit earned during a foreign internship or the Georgia Southern University Study Abroad program may count toward the upper-division course work in French required for the B.A. or B.S.ED. in French. Additional hours may be counted as electives. Students interested in obtaining credit during their internship at Saint-Louis must set up a course of study in consultation with a French faculty member before the end of the previous semester. They may also elect to attend some of the classes offered at Saint-Louis and work out with a GSU French professor a course of study based on the content of these classes. The decision for admission into any class rests with the individual instructor teaching that class.

APPLICATION

Interested GSU French students must submit (1) an application form (pdf), (2) an official copy of their transcript, (3) two letters of recommendation, preferably from two French instructors, and (4) a Teaching Proposal.

The Teaching Proposal should include

  • a tentative list of authentic documents (brochures, ads, fliers, recordings, etc.) that the candidate will be able to take with him/her to Saint-Louis in order to lead various communicative activities (conversation/ discussion sessions in English, role play activities, and communicative games) indicating briefly what some of these activities might be.
  • a tentative list of US civilization topics the candidate would like to present to Saint-Louis English students, indicating what kinds of supporting texts (or recorded materials) are/will be available for him/her to take to Saumur.
  • a sample outline (if possible with supporting documents) of an oral presentation on a topic of the candidate's choice.
