"Team spirit. Publications, in order to be published regularly, requires a dedication to cooperation and collaboration."
- Harold Evans

Sarah Monahan
My name is Sarah Monahan, and I am  Public Relations major at Georgia Southern University. My interest in fashion and writing have driven me to know and understand the qualties of editing in the industry of fashion publications. After researching, the topic has helped to further my aspirations for the fashion industry, and hopefully working for a magazine.

Background

To work as an editor, that person would be well qualified with a background in liberal arts, like communications or writing. The second most beneficial aspect would be for the individual to have a general knowledge of the specification of the job. For example, if the career was for editing a sports magazine the editor or prospect would be able to perform a better job by understanding the subject matter. Also, because of so many advancements, it is best for those interested in editing to know and understand the use of computers. Now it is much easier for writers and editors to conduct

Editing in Publications

Magazines usually have multiple editors, starting with an executive editor who is in charge of overseeing the production of the project. Most editors are copy editors who review a copy or piece for the magazine for grammatical errors and accuracy. In a magazine, there is not a high demand for technical editors, because they generally work with electronics, for the government, or even in a medical field. Technica editors analyze their projects with a slightly different eye. This is because their audience is not always one they can relate to. For example,  when a techincal editor is working on a computer manual, that person has to consider the most simple-minded consumer trying to work through step-by-step; whereas in a magaine, editors relate to the readers.

Magazine editing and technical editing have similar goals to tend, but the process in which they are reached differ. In a magazine, publications are produced on a monthly basis. This means that the editor does not have exces amounts of time to review, but they scope out the flaws. In technical editing, an instruction manual is not in high demand without the piece of equipment. Given this, the technical editor has time to evaluate the manual for a computer to enable the best usage. All the fields of editing change depending on the are of specification.

Appeal

Cosmo Appeal

When editing a fashion magazine, th editor has to take into consideration the image of the publication. In general, fashion magazines are filled with vibrant colors, different fonts, lots of pictures, and tons of variety! An editor has to be able to call the shots and want to see all the excitement. The editor has to be able to call the shots, and maintain order. A reader does not want to open a page to mass chaos, but they do want to see the masterpiece. The editor has to find the balance between the two. It is the copy editor's job to fine-tune the details for teh articles, taking care of grammatical mistakes, making it easy to read. Flipping through the pages of the May 2008 Cosmopolitan is a great example of the flashy appeal from the glossy pages. (Figure 1).

Relationships

In a magazine, editors will have to keep u with the variety. In relation to the writers, the editors can work trough email whether they're in the office or out. Another important point when editing in publications is the relationships with the writers. A copy editor needs to be able to meet a common ground, and be able to explain why certain changes were made on the piece. In any writer-editor relationship, there needs to be an adequate amount of communitcation. In order to get the work done, the editor and writer will have to compile the piece with the audiences' interest at heart. As a fashion editor, that person will have to develop a relationship with photographers, stylists, and designers (The Fashion Editor). The editor has to keep the ball rolling in the work environment, especially in the fashion industry. Since planning for a season's new trend is done months in advance, an editor must be adamant about the deadlines. Again with the readers' interest, an editor must make executive decisions about the art of fashion.
