Creative Writing

What is the study of creative writing?

Creative writing is the expression of your thoughts, observations, or original ideas in fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, screenwriting, or multigenre pieces of writing. There is a craft to communicating what you want to say, and in the creative writing classes at Georgia Southern University, you will read, study, and write with a goal of learning and practicing that craft.

Studying creative writing doesn’t limit you to writing poetry and prose! Our students have gone on to apply their creative problem-solving skills in corporate positions like social media managers or marketing copywriters. Because the Writing & Linguistics B.A. incorporates the fields of professional & technical writing, linguistics, & writing studies, our students learn these skills while also taking rigorous coursework in creative writing.

What can creative writing offer me?

The study and practice of creative writing teaches you to read and write like a writer. You’ll read a wide range of work, much of it from contemporary creative writers, to gain both a broad and deep understanding of the craft of writing. During workshops, you’ll receive feedback from your peers and professors that will help you revise your work. You’ll also learn how to submit your work for publication and contests. Our area hosts multiple visiting writers a year, and students in creative writing classes have the chance to meet and talk to those writers during their craft talks and public readings.

Current students & alumni

Our students can take courses in introductory or advanced fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, and screenwriting—or a combination of their choosing.

Students run Creative Writing Club or Writers’ Guild; travel to the annual Association of Writers and Writing Programs conference; put on public readings; get recognized for their talent in our annual scholarships and awards; intern with the magazine Wraparound South; and get to know each other in our small, friendly community of creative writers.

Our alumni have gone on to pursue advanced degrees in creative writing, publish books, and use their skills in a variety of corporate and professional settings. Learn more about our talented alumni here!
