Fledge: A Journal of Outstanding First-Year Writing

Fledge, a journal of outstanding first year writing, is published annually by the Department of Writing and Linguistics, showcases outstanding essays written by students in English 1101 and 1102. In addition to writing all of the essays featured within this journal, students also serve as judges, editors, and manuscript designers.

For years, we have encouraged faculty members to nominate students' essays for this journal. Now we'd like to encourage YOU to submit your own work!

Any essay produced in ENGL 1101 or ENGL 1102 in the current academic year (from January of last year up to the deadline submission date this year) will be eligible for publication consideration.

Your entry will be reviewed by a panel of volunteer student judges and faculty judges. If your essay is selected, your work will appear online and in print in a handsomely bound publication that will be distributed to the University community, local high schools and businesses, and to the donors and sponsors. Winners who are published in Fledge will be announced via the GeorgeAnne by May of this year.

To enter your work for consideration, please submit:

  1. one printed copy of your essay, with your name & your instructor's name to the Fledge Contest mailbox in Newton 1118
  2. a completed self-nomination form;
  3. an electronic copy of your essay via the fledge website submission link below.

Feel free to contact us here or at the Writing and Linguistics office in the Newton Building.

Also note: Fledge specializes in essays.
