Quotation Marks Worksheet 1

There are 10 pairs of quotation marks missing from the following passages.  Identify the sentences that need quotation marks and make the necessary corrections.

Passage A

Tony and Lola were driving home from the movies when they saw a man staggering along the street.  I wonder if he’s all right, Tony said.

Let’s stop and find out, Lola suggested.  They caught up to the man, who was leaning against a tree.

Are you OK? Lola asked.  Is there anything we can do?

There’s nothing the matter, the man answered.  I guess I had a few too many after work.  Now I can’t seem to find my front door.

Tony steadied the man and asked, Do you live anywhere near here?

He responded, Yes, if this is Forrest Avenue, I live at 3619.

Tony and Lola walked the man to his door, where he fumbled in his pockets, took out a key, and began to stab wildly with it at the lock.

Let me hold your key and I’ll let you in, Tony offered.

The man refused, saying, Oh, no, I’ll hold the key – you hold the house.

Passage B

When Martin found a large dent in his new Datsun, he took it back to the agency.  We can fix that, the smiling mechanic said.  Just leave
            it for a few days.

Martin waited three days and then called.  Is my car ready yet? he asked.

Not yet, the mechanic said.  Try the end of the week.

The following Monday, Martin called again.  Is my car ready?

The mechanic sounded apologetic.  Not yet.  We’ll have it Friday for sure.

On Friday, when Martin picked up his car, he noticed a new cigarette burn in the upholstery.  We’ll fix that, but it takes a week to match
            the material, the manager said.

Martin took the bus home, fuming.  A few minutes later, the phone rang.

It was the mechanic.  You left your owner’s card here.  Want us to mail it?

Martin said, You may as well keep it.  You’re using the car more than I am.

Passage C

Fran put aside her books to answer the phone. Hello, she said.

Hey, Fran, take a break, said Nick.  There’s a great party going on here.  Why don’t you come over?

Fran hesitated.  She was tired and bored; the party was tempting.  She felt like a cartoon character with a devil perched on one
shoulder and an angel on the other.

Go to the party, the devil said. Forget this studying.

Stay home, the angel whispered, or you’ll regret it tomorrow.

Interrupting Fran’s thoughts, Nick urged, Oh, come on, you can cram when you get home.

Fran felt an imaginary stab from the devil’s pitchfork.  I want to, Nick, she said.   Then she gave into the imaginary angel.  But I can’t.

I really have to pass this test.
