            Passage A

Vince choosed a job as a supermarket cashier because he liked people.   After what happened yesterday, though, he isn’t so sure.   First, after he had rang up her entire order, a woman throwed a handful of coupons at him.   Then she gave him a hard time when he shown her that a few had expired.   She begun making nasty comments about stupid supermarket help.  The next person in line thought Vince had put the eggs on the bottom and would not leave until Vince had took everything out of the bag and repacked it.  Later, two teenagers fighted with Vince over the price of a bag of M&M’s, saying that it could never have rose so high in one week.  Vince gone home in a terrible mood, wondering how he would ever force himself to come in the next day.

Passage B

One winter my Siamese cat catched the flu.  She was only a kitten then, and she had never slowed down for a minute until the day she begun sneezing.   Then she creeped over to a corner of the living room and set perfectly still, looking at us through sad saucer eyes that constantly oozed tears.   For three days, she ate almost nothing and drunk much more water than usual-a sure sign of illness.  I finally taked her to the vet, who prescribed a thick pink medicine that had to be feeded to her three times a day by an eyedropper.  This was easier said than did; more medicine got onto the furniture and me than into the cat.  What finally cured her, I think, was the electric blanket I had just  buyed for my own bed.   She climbed onto it, I turned it on and it keeped her warm until her flu went away.
