Sentence Fragments Worksheet 1

Directions:  Identify all sentence fragments.  In the space following each group of words, write a revision of each fragment, incorporating it into the preceding sentence, if it is logical to do so, or making a correct sentence out of it.  If a numbered group of words contains no fragments, write C in the space.

 

Example:  Aubrey if particularly fond of fattening foods.  Such as spareribs, fried potatoes, and desserts.

  1. Good food is dear to the minds and stomachs of all Americans.  Although American cuisine is ridiculed around the world.

  1. Much may be said, however, in defense of the diversity of foods found in American restaurants.  If not in defense of the quality.

  1. Almost every town of any size in the United States has a strip of highway.  Ablaze with neon signs inviting the American family to eat everything from tacos and pizza to egg rolls and bagels.

  1. Indeed, the large national chains win many adult customers through children.  Whom they entice with catchy television commercials, the personal appearance of talking animals and other entertainers, and special hats or games inscribed with the restaurant’s name.

  1. The popularity of the automobile helped bring about the drive-in restaurant of a few decades ago, the place where uniformed curb-boys or waitresses on roller skates rushed to take the passengers’ order.  And brought it out on a tray, which was then attached to the driver’s rolled-down window.

  1. But Americans, always increasing their pace of life, traded the drive-in for the drive-through restaurant.  Where they read an elaborate outdoor menu printed on a large speaker that takes the order and informs the driver of how much the meal costs.

  1. Then the motorist drives up to a window.  Where he pays, collects his food, and goes on his merry way.

  1. On the other hand, many Americans scorn the fast-food restaurants.  Because they believe them to be nutritionally unsound and because they find the food boring.

  2. Establishments that serve soup and salad or vegetarian meals are becoming more and more popular.  Especially among young people who often cannot afford the high cost of meat and among people of all ages who want to consume less meat for the good of their health.
