I love the idea of letting students revise my drafts. They will see that even teacher first drafts are often disjointed, even ugly. I connected with the Mortimer Adler quotation - "A good book is one you have to put down." As students become more aware of the expectations they should have of themselves as readers and writers, the more likely they are to pause in their reading to ponder and reflect, even question the text. I am excited about the idea of teaching students "the language of response . . . commenting on the text, not on the writers." By giving them specific guidelines and language, I hope to help them become more active listeners who can frame helpful responses and make suggestions in non-threatening ways.
