SPAN1001 Elementary Spanish I Credits: 3.00 Introduction to listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish and to the culture of Spanish-speaking regions.
SPAN1002 Elementary Spanish II Credits: 3.00 Continued listening, speaking, reading and writing, in Spanish with further study of the culture of Spanish- speaking regions.
SPAN1060 Accelerated Elementary Spanish Credits: 6.00 An accelerated introduction to listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish and to the culture of Spanish- speaking regions. Completes the elementary levels of Spanish in one semester.
SPAN2001 Intermediate Spanish I Credits: 3.00  Building upon communication skills (understanding, speaking, reading, and writing Spanish) and cultural understanding, developed at the elementary level.

Intermediate Spanish II: 

Grammar & Composition

Credits: 3.00  Development of writing skills and closer examination of grammatical structures of the Spanish language. Writing assignments based on both oral and written authentic sources. May be exempted through Department of Foreign Languages testing program.
SPAN2060 Accelerated Intermediate Spanish Credits: 6.00  Accelerated intermediate Spanish with continued work on listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish and the culture of Spanish-speaking regions. Completes the intermediate levels of Spanish in one semester.
SPAN2131 Spanish for Hospitality/Tourism Credits: 3.00  Designed specificaly for students in hotel and restaurant management in order to acquaint them with basic vocabulary for use in their specific area of study and may be used to fulfill graduation requirements for the B.S. degree (in lieu of SPAN2001).
SPAN3030 Selected Topics in Spanish Credits: 3.00  Selected topics in Spanish.
SPAN3130 Conversation Credits: 3.00  Provides oral practice in Spanish using authentic communicative activities.
SPAN3131 Spanish Grammar & Composition Credits: 3.00  A treatment of fine points of grammar and idioms, with special attention to the verbal and pronomial systems.
SPAN3195 Studies Abroad: Language Credits: 3.00 A course in oral and written communications in Spanish using materials and resources available in the foreign country.
SPAN3230 Approach to Hispanic Literature Credits: 3.00  Introduction to reading literary texts in Spanish. Selected literary works by genre of poetry, narrative prose, drama, and essay will be studied with attention to the study of their forms of literary expression in Spanish and introduction of terms related to the discussion of literature in Spanish.
SPAN3295 Studies Abroad: Literature Credits: 3.00 The study of selected works of literature in Spanish which are appropriate for building on language skills or which are related thematically to the country or culture visited.
SPAN3395 Studies Abroad: Culture Credits: 3.00 Students become familiar with the culture of the country in which they are staying by examining selected historical, geographical, and artistic features and discussing aspects of the lifestyles of the country.
SPAN3530 Intro SPANfor Business Credits: 3.00 Provides a basic foundation in vocabulary and discourse related to functional business areas, practice in carrying out typical business transactions in Spanish, and practice in writing commercial documents in Spanish, including translating and interpreting activities.
SPAN3531 Technology for Spanish for Business Credits: 3.00 Study of foundation in vocabulary and discourse related to functional technology for business and industry in today's global society. Researching, creating, and applying technologies used in the business world.
SPAN4130 Advanced & Applied Conversation Credits: 3.00 Builds on oral skills with activities designed to be applied to more complex communicative tasks, including negotiating, supporting opinions, and solving problems.
SPAN4131 Spanish Stylistics Credits: 3.00 Students will study models of effective and elegant writing in Spanish for improvement of their own writing. Additional study of more sophisticated levels of expression and vocabulary.
SPAN4132 Phonetics Credits: 3.00 The course provides an understanding of Spanish articulatory phonetics. Students will learn the basic principles of Spanish pronunciation and enhance the correct pronunciation of Spanish through intensive oral drills. Students will also enhance their Spanish spelling and will be able to describe the standard Spanish as well as other dialects of Spanish.
SPAN4195 Studies Abroad: Advanced Language Credits: 3.00 The practice of Spanish language and study of the supporting grammatical structures using materials and resources available in the foreign country.
SPAN4231 Intro to Latin American Literature I Credits: 3.00 Introduction to the literature of Spanish America from the Colonial Period to "Modernismo". Emphasis on literary currents in connection with their history and culture.
SPAN4232 Intro to Latin American Literature II Credits: 3.00 Introduction to the literature of Spanish America from the end of the 19th century to the present. Study of representative authors, their themes and their significance for the development of the literary period.
SPAN4233 Peninsular Literature I Credits: 3.00 The study of authors and readings, with special attention given to the literary movements and historical context, from the Middle Ages to the seventeenth century.
SPAN4234 Peninsular Literature II Credits: 3.00 The study of authors and readings, with special attention given to the literary movements and historical context, from the seventeenth century to the present day.
SPAN4295 Studies Abroad: Advanced Literature Credits: 3.00 An intensive study of literary works thematically related to the country or culture visited by the student.
SPAN4332 Caribbean Culture and Civilization Credits: 3.00 Study of the development of the Caribbean in terms of history, culture, and civilization. In addition, the course will examine the literature, pictorial art, music, the economic, social and political aspects of the area today. Emphasis on Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic.
SPAN4334 Peninsular Civilization and Culture Credits: 3.00 General survey of culture and civilization of the Iberian peninsula from its earliest inhabitants to the present.
SPAN4335 Spanish American Civilization and Culture Credits: 3.00 A study of the culture and civilization of Spanish America from the time of the Pre-Colombian Indian societies through the present.
SPAN4395 Studies Abroad: Advanced Civilization Credits: 3.00 A study at the advanced level of the land, culture, civilization, monuments, and artistic achievements of the country in which the student is studying.
SPAN4431 19th Century Literature in Spain Credits: 3.00 A study of literary works with focus on recurrent themes of transition from Spain's status as a world power and the decay of traditional social values during the nineteenth century in Spain.
SPAN4432 Twentieth Century Spanish Literature Credits: 3.00 A study of literary works and trends in twentieth century Spain.
SPAN4433 Golden Age Prose & Poetry Credits: 3.00 Study of representative works and its authors of the prose and poetry of Spain during the 16th and 17th Centuries.
SPAN4434 Golden Age Drama Credits: 3.00 Study of drama in Spain during the 16th and 17th centuries tracing its development from the Medieval through the Baroque periods.
SPAN4436 Twentieth Century Spanish-American Literature Credits: 3.00 A study of literary works in Spanish American from 1925 to the present. Emphasis on literary tendencies with respect to cultural, social, and economic factors of this period.
SPAN4530 Advanced Spanish for Business I Credits: 3.00 Provides an advanced level of commercial Spanish vocabulary and discourse related to functional business areas and situational practices for success in the Spanish business world.
SPAN4531 Advanced Spanish for Business II Credits: 3.00 A continuation of the study of basic foundation in vocabulary and discourse related to the functional technology for business and industry in today's global society. Researching, creating, and applying technologies used in the business world.
SPAN4532 Translation and Interpretation Credits: 3.00 Introduction to the comparative stylistics through translations. Comparative study of characteristic modes of expressions, introduction to the theoretical aspects and techniques of translation, using a variety of commercial documents in business and industry.
SPAN4533 Business Through Literature Credits: 3.00 Reading in the social, economic and political changes of the Hispanic World through essays, novels, plays, short stories, and poems.
SPAN4534 The Manufacturing Enterprise Credits: 3.00 This course is designed to provide a uniquely hands-on experience which entails student creation of a company and subsequent product development, marketing and production for a profit.
SPAN4790 Internship in Spanish Credits: 1-15 Internship in one or more Spanish speaking countries.
SPAN4890 Directed Study in Spanish Credits: 1-15 Concentrated study of a topic in Spanish literature, culture, society, thought or language. May be repeated for credit provided a new topic is studied.

SPAN5230 Medieval Literature Credits: 3.00 Study of representative authors and their works through the 15th Century.
SPAN5232 Literature of Hispanic Minorities Credits: 3.00 Acquaints students with the representation of various minority groups in Hispanic society as represented in literature. Emphasis on ethnicity, cultural traditions and their relation to historical and political events. Representative narrative works and poetry.
SPAN5234 Modern Peninsular Women Writers Credits: 3.00 This course explores current works (prose, poetry, drama) by women in Spain. Analyzes selected works as individual literary creations, and also situates them in their cultural, historical and aesthetic contexts, using appropriate critical methodologies.
SPAN5235 Modern Spanish American Women Writers Credits: 3.00 A study of post-World War II literary works by Spanish American women of both Spain and Spanish America. Issues affecting the changing role of women in Spanish American society will be examined as will each author's personal style and point of view.
SPAN5330 African-Hispanic Culture Credits: 3.00 An introduction to African-Hispanic culture through the reading and discussion of poetry, short stories, historical documents and movies in which Afro-Hispanics play a central role.
SPAN5331 Latinos in the U.S. Credits: 3.00 This course is designed to familiarize students with significant cultural, historical and social contributions of Latinos in the United States. Emphasis will be placed on the diversity within the Latino community and the contributions of Latino literature.
SPAN5332 Spanish American Cinema Credits: 3.00 To provide a knowledge of contemporary Latin American films in Spanish. The course will focus on Latin American culture in general and discuss a diversity of themes such as: traditions, customs, official history, women's role, marginalized individuals, students' needs, educational system, a search for identity, authentic dishes, exile, and politics.

SPAN7090 Selected Topics in Spanish Credits: 3.00 Selected Topics in Spanish.
SPAN7091 Seminar in Spanish Credits: 3.00 Seminar in Spanish.
SPAN7130 Second Language Acquisition in Spanish Credits: 3.00  A study of the problems of second language acquisition in Spanish related to programs which emphasize the teaching of communicative skills for use in authentic contexts. Theoretical and historical background as well as hands-on activities.
SPAN7131 Stylistics in Spanish Credits: 3.00 Studies the features of the Spanish language which are necessary for precision and elegance in writing. Includes study of illustrative texts, review of advanced grammatical features, lexical groupings, and written compositions.
SPAN7195 Studies Abroad: Language Credits: 3.00 Studies oral and written features of the Spanish within a Spanish-speaking country, using native materials and resources.
SPAN7230 Epics and Ballads Credits: 3.00 An introduction to the rich tradition in Spanish Literature of narrative verse. Begins with the oral traditions of medieval epics and ballads and continues through the contemporary written ballad of Garcia Lorca and the mixed tradition of the Mexican-American corridos.
SPAN7231 Literature of the Antihero Credits: 3.00 Studies the theme of the Spanish anti-hero, the "pícaro" and the development of the picaresque genre from a historic point of view. Additional contrastive study of works of the Golden Age to set picaresque apart as a unique type in Spanish literature.
SPAN7232 The Epoch of Cervantes Credits: 3.00 Studies the flowering of Spanish literature during the Golden Age, with Miguel de Cervantes and his works as the centerpiece of the age. Study of selected prose, drama, poetic works of the period.
SPAN7233 Romanticism Credits: 3.00 Studies the Nineteenth century romantic movement in Spain as an outgrowth of cultural change and transition.
SPAN7234 Literature of Post-War Social Criticism Credits: 3.00 Studies the literature of social criticism in Post-war Francoist Spain as one result of the upheaval of the Civil war and the onset of dictatorship.
SPAN7236 Contemporary Spanish-American Literature Credits: 3.00 Studies selected works of the most representative Spanish-American authors from the "Boom" (1960-1975) to the present. Emphasis on the avant-garde movement and its impact on Spanish American poetry and on regional and psychological fiction and drama.
SPAN7237 Modernism Credits: 3.00 Studies the renovation of Spanish-American literature from 1880 to 1920, focusing on the plurality of its literary sources and the cultural and social factors of Spanish- America of that period. Examination of the significance of modernism on all Spanish-American literature.
