Current
Dept. Mission Statement (as of 2003)
The Department of Sociology
and Anthropology is committed to a comparative and holistic approach
to the study of the human experience. The sociological and anthropological
perspectives provide a broad understanding of the origins as well
as the meaning of physical and cultural diversity in the world past,
present, and future. As such, the programs offer the opportunity
for understanding world affairs and problems within the total context
of the human experience and for constructing solutions to world
problems firmly grounded in that context. Specifically, the department
offers: (1) students of all disciplines the opportunity to deepen
and broaden their knowledge of humankind and of themselves; (2)
a strong preparation for graduate study in sociology or anthropology;
and (3) an academic and practical background for those who wish
to apply the anthropological or sociological perspective in a wide
range of professional careers, such as social services, applied
social research, education, and archeology.
The Bachelors’
programs in sociology and anthropology are designed to foster intellectual
development (i.e. logical thinking, literacy, numeracy, historical
consciousness, understanding science and scientific inquiry, diversity
and social values) by sharing with students the perspectives and
contents of the two disciplines.
