Learning Outcomes

 
The Master of Arts in Social Science is a multi-disciplinary degree program which allows learners, in conjunction with the graduate director and their advisor, to design an individualized program of study. The program is administered in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and coordinated with appropriate departments in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. Students are expected to take classes in several disciplines, but they must take at least 15 credit hours in at least one of the following areas B History, Political Science, Psychology, or Sociology.

1. Communication Skills

§ Ability to organize ideas in a logical manner
§ Ability to write effectively with appropriate content, organization, and mechanics
§ A bility to organize and make formal presentations
§ A bility to explain and defend views in a clear and logical manner

2. Technology Based Skills
§ ability to access and communicate information using modern technologies
§ ability to use current information technologies in order to solve problems

3. Research Skills
§ ability to conduct a review of the literature
§ ability to analyze data or interpret sources in a manner appropriate to their speciality area
§ ability to use appropriate software to organize, identify, or analyze information
§ ability to identify and apply appropriate research methods
§ ability to use evidence to support an argument or position

4. Analytical Skills
§ ability to summarize arguments
§ ability to critique and judge the value of information/arguments
§ ability to formulate questions that are Aanswerable@
§ ability to use evidence to support and/or critique arguments

5. Knowledge of Social Science
§ ability to apply social scientific methods
§ demonstrate familiarity with various theoretical perspectives/paradigms in the social sciences
§ recognizes interrelationships among problems and issues from different disciplinary perspectives
§ selected courses from at least three disciplines
