Meg Daly Heap

Meg Daly Heap

Meg currently serves as the District Attorney in the Eastern Judicial Circuit of Chatham County, but years before she was our “Outstanding Graduating Senior” in Sociology. She graduated in 1986 as a cum laude honor graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology and in 1992 she earned her J.D. from the Mercer University Walter F. George School of Law.

On April 6th 2013 Meg Daly Heap was awarded the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences alumni of the Year.

When I asked Meg whether sociology had anything to do with her becoming a prosecutor and D. A., she said it had everything to do with it. As a senior majoring in sociology she participated in an internship with the Victim and Witness Assistance program. After graduation she continued to work with the program and saw first-hand what lawyers did and how crimes affected both victims and witnesses. That is what inspired her to go back to school and earn her J.D. degree. Even now she is committed to victim advocacy; she is active in the research of domestic violence of target populations, elder abuse, and senior citizens as targets of crime. In 2005, she became the first elder abuse prosecutor in the state. Her expertise in the field positions her to lead countless symposia, workshops, and training seminars for law enforcement and other professionals on topics that bring awareness to elder abuse and other victim and survivor issues.

A public servant known for rolling up her sleeves and getting to work on policy issues that affect marginalized groups, Meg commits much of her time to valuable service organizations. She is a member of the Greater Savannah Coalition of Aging, the Elder Abuse Multi‐disciplinary Team, Adult Services Advisory Council, S.A.L.T. Council (Seniors and Law Enforcement Together), Senior Medicare Patrol Advisory Council, Advisory Council for the State Long‐term Care Ombudsmen Program, and serves on the Coastal Children’s Advocacy Center Board of Directors.
