Religious Studies

TaskForceReligiousSymbolsThe Religious Studies Program at Georgia Southern University introduces students to scholarly attempts to understand and explain religion within the context of social life. To this end, we teach students how to assess data from different religions by employing theories and methods from disciplines in the academic study of religion.

Unlike confessional approaches to the study of religion, courses in religious studies will not evaluate truth claims made within different religions.  Instead of promoting any particular viewpoint, we encourage students to analyze diverse phenomena that have been classified as religious. With an education that stresses critical reflection upon subjects drawn from a range of historical periods and geographical areas, students in religious studies will be prepared to productively engage in public discourse about pressing social, political, and cultural issues.
