About Dr. Schmid

Dr. William Schmid teaches trumpet and jazz and coordinates the Georgia Southern Jazz Studies program, which includes a big band, combos, and courses in jazz improvisation, jazz history, jazz styles, and jazz pedagogy. He has served two terms as the secretary of the Georgia Association of Jazz Educators. Before joining the University faculty in 1986, Schmid taught trumpet and jazz studies for two years at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Schmid was the clinician/director for the Nevada All-State Jazz Band in 2006. In 2007, he was a guest trumpet artist performing on a series of concerts with the National Youth Orchestra of El Salvador.

He received a bachelor’s degree in music education from the University of Dayton and earned a master’s degree in music education (in jazz pedagogy) and a doctorate in trumpet performance from the University of North Texas. While in Texas, his professional playing involved many jazz and commercial ensembles in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Since arriving in Georgia, Schmid has performed regularly with the Savannah Jazz Orchestra, the Georgia All-Star Directors Big Band and other groups in the region. He has played with noteworthy jazz artists such as Louis Bellson, David Liebman, Clark Terry, Jimmy Heath, Joey DeFrancesco, Claudio Roditi, Nick Brignola, Ernie Andrews, Diane Schuur, and Kathy Kosins.

Schmid is also a big band and brass quintet composer and arranger, published by Really Good Music and Eighth Note Publications. His works have been premiered at the long-running Savannah Jazz Festival and at the Georgia Music Educators Association conferences.
