Southern Saxophones, the Georgia Southern University saxophone studio and ensemble, is active on campus and throughout southeast Georgia. Since its inception in 1999, Southern Saxophones and the Southern Quartet have performed for ArtsFest, Winds at Southern, Earth Day, the Better Breathers Association, Scholar’s Day, Downtown Statesboro’s F1rst Friday, in City Market Savannah, and at the Georgia Music Educators Association in-service conference. Our saxophone students have performed at Atlanta Sax Day, regional meetings of the North American Saxophone Alliance, the Carolina Saxophone Festival, the US Navy Band’s International Saxophone Symposium, and the Southeastern Saxophone Symposium.

We hold a fall studio recital that includes soloists and Southern Saxophones. Night of Wild Sax is our annual spring concert of solo and chamber music featuring saxophone ensembles ranging from duos through full saxophone choir. In addition, the saxophone studio has hosted the following guest artists and clinicians:

Graduates from the saxophone studio have gone on to master’s work at Florida State University, VanderCook College of Music, and Oakland University. Music majors from the studio teach in Gwinnett, Cobb, Richmond, Tattnall, Telfair, Metcalfe (Kentucky) and Duval (Florida) County Schools, perform with Tara Winds and in various popular groups, and work as media artists. We are also proud that Southern Saxophones has included many students from other disciplines: our past members work for Walt Disney World Resorts, Kia, Environmental Resources Management, and in private dental practice.

In the course of study, saxophone majors will work on soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones in solo and ensemble contexts. The university owns two P. Mauriat sopraninos; Yamaha 62 sopranos, tenors and baritones; and a Keilwerth bass.
