Southern Chorale is the premiere choral ensemble of Georgia Southern University and is directed by Dr. Shannon Jeffreys, Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities. Southern Chorale’s membership draws from the most talented vocal students to provide a professional foundation for performance and choral music education majors and a meaningful musical experience for those University students who wish to continue to sing in an elite ensemble. The ensemble performs literature from all styles and periods with an emphasis on a cappella repertoire and masterworks with orchestra.
In addition to numerous campus and community performances, the Chorale has appeared at conferences of the American Choral Directors Association and the National Association for Music Education. Each year the ensemble tours throughout the southeast region. As part of Music International Studies, the Chorale has performed at Saint Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin and Canterbury Cathedral. In May 2013, Southern Chorale placed second in the mixed choir category of the 4th International Anton Bruckner Choir Competition and Festival in Linz, Austria. A tour of Italy followed that included a performance with the Corale Puccini in Lucca and a return performance at the Vatican.
Auditions for Southern Chorale are held the weekend before fall classes begin. Members are expected to have advanced sight-reading skills and vocal abilities.
