CHORAL MUSIC

The Choral Program at Georgia Southern University is recognized as one of the finest in the Southeast. Consisting of three student ensembles and two outreach ensembles, the program provides choral opportunities for students, faculty, staff, and the greater Georgia Southern community.  In addition to individual concerts, choirs combine annually with the Statesboro-Georgia Southern Symphony in performance of major choral/orchestral works.

Georgia Southern Chorale

Dr. Rodney Caldwell, conductor
caldwell@georgiasouthern.edu

Georgia Southern Chorale is the top touring ensemble in the Choral Area. Consisting of 41singers selected through competitive audition, the choir performs music from all style periods and genres.  The choir holds auditions in the fall of each year, and membership is open to any Georgia Southern student.

In addition to on campus performances, GSC has made numerous appearances on conferences of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) and Music Educators Association (MENC). It's most recent conference performance (Southern Division MENC - January of 2003) was broadcast on Georgia Public Radio. GSC released its first CD Sing at Southern in the fall of 1999, and will release its second CD in 2005.

Georgia Southern Chorale tours annually, and every third year tours internationally.  In 2002, GSC appeared in the Czech Republic, Austria, and Germany.  In 2005, the choir will be in Italy performing in Rome (St Peter's, Vatican City), Monterubbiano, Florence, and Aosta.

At the conclusion of the concert tour, students will be afforded the opportunity of additional study in conjunction with the Bavarian Music Academy.  Students participating in the residency spend an additional three weeks in intense academic study at two of the academy's three sites (Alteglofsheim and Hammelburg).  Students participating in this academic residency blend academic study, performance, and cultural excursion into a unique educational experience.

University Singers and Women's Chorus
Dr. Adam Con, conductor
adamcon@georgiasouthern.edu

University Singers and Women's Chorus are ensembles comprised of students from across the Georgia Southern campus. Designed to provide a quality choral experience for all students, these choirs are specifically focused towards the non music major wishing to have a choral experience at the collegiate level.

University Singers and Women's Chorus present 4-6 concerts annually, but do not require the travel and touring commitment that accompanies membership in Georgia Southern Chorale.

Statesboro-Georgia Southern Community Chorus

Dr. Adam Con, conductor
adamcon@georgiasouthern.edu

The Statesboro-Georgia Southern Community Chorus is a community outreach ensemble in the Vocal/Choral Area. Made up of university faculty/staff and community members, the choir performs regularly with the other choirs in the choral area, and joins with the Statesboro-Georgia Southern Symphony in performance of major choral/orchestral works.  The choir rehearses at 715PM on Monday nights at Trinity Episcopal church in Statesboro

Statesboro Youth Chorale
Dr. Michael Braz and Ms Sarah Hancock, directors

The Statesboro Youth Chorale is a regional community children’s chorus for students ages 8-13 who enjoy singing and want to be a part of a trained performing organization.

Choristers study ensemble singing, voice production, music reading and other skills involved in fine performance.  Our rehearsal and concert season runs from August through May and includes local and regional concerts, as well as collaborations with other community and campus musical organizations.

Youth Chorale admission is through a 10-minute audition, which assesses choir readiness through pitch-matching and simple voice exercises.  No prior musical experience is required.  Auditions must be scheduled by contacting Dr. Michael Braz Dr. Braz at 764-7464 (764-SING).

The chorale also provides internships for choral music educations students.
