About Dr. Schmid:
Dr. Bill Schmid teaches trumpet and jazz at Georgia Southern University, where he is an associate professor of music. He coordinates the Georgia Southern Jazz Studies program, which includes a big band, combos, and courses in jazz improvisation, jazz history, jazz styles, and jazz pedagogy. Additionally, he has served two terms as the Secretary of the Georgia Association of Jazz Educators.
Before joining the GSU faculty in 1986, Schmid taught trumpet and jazz studies for two years at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish , Nova Scotia , Canada . He received a bachelor's degree in music education from the University of Dayton and earned a master's degree in music education (in jazz pedagogy) and a doctorate in trumpet performance from the University of North Texas . While in Texas , his professional playing involved many jazz and commercial ensembles in the Dallas / Fort Worth area. Since arriving in Georgia , Bill has performed regularly with the Savannah Jazz Orchestra, the Georgia All-Star Directors Big Band and other groups in the region. Over the years, he has played with such noteworthy jazz artists as: Louis Bellson, David Liebman, Clark Terry, Jimmy Heath, Joey DeFrancesco, Claudio Roditi, Nick Brignola, Ernie Andrews, Diane Schuur and Kathy Kosins.
He is also a big band and brass quintet composer and arranger, published by Really Good Music and White Rock Music; his works have often been premiered at the long-running Savannah Jazz Festival and at the Georgia Music Educators Association conferences.
