Scholarships & Awards
The Department offers a number of scholarships and awards to deserving undergraduate and graduate students. Competition for these is brisk. Application for the Russell, Schneider, and Powell Scholarships is done online through this form.

Ruffin Humanities Scholarship
The Ruffin Humanities Scholarship is the largest scholarship endowment funded by a single donor in the history of Georgia Southern. The award covers tuition (in-state or out-of-state tuition) and mandatory fees. The Ruffin Scholarship can be held simultaneously with a HOPE scholarship.
George K. Brannen English Scholars Fund
The Brannen Fund supports undergraduate and graduate student scholarship, including travel funds for on-site research or conference presentations. Recipients are rising junior or senior English majors or English M.A. students.
Woody Powell Scholarship
The Powell Scholarship is for a rising junior or senior English major.
Fielding D. Russell Scholarship
The Fielding D. Russell Scholarship is for a rising junior or senior English major.
Tina Schneider Scholarship
The Tina Schneider Scholarship is for a rising junior or senior English major.
Dr. Gary B. Sullivan Scholarship in Irish Studies
The Sullivan Scholarship is for a junior or senior minor in Irish Studies.
Eddie Ivie Scholarship
The Eddie Ivie Scholarship is for a Georgia Southern student participating in our Study Abroad Program in Waterford, Ireland.
Best Essay in English Graduate Studies
An award for an English M.A. student with the best submitted essay..
Best Essay in Philosophy and Religious Studies
An award for a Philosophy major or Religious Studies minor with the best submitted essay.
Best Essay in Literature
An award for an English major with the best submitted essay.
Outstanding Student in English
An award given to the senior English major with the highest grade point average.
Outstanding Student in Philosophy
An award given to the best student who is a senior Philosophy major.
