Jack N. and Addie D. Averitt Foundation Scholarship in History History: Established in 2015 by the Jack N. and Addie D. Averitt Foundation.
Criteria: Award will be given to eight junior or senior level students majoring in history and interested in exploring some aspect of Southern history, with no restrictions as to time period or cultural perspective. Eligible applicants must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher and should be enrolled fulltime.

Sally T. Gershman Memorial Scholarship
History: Established in 1994 as a memorial by Dyan and Michael Gershman, children of the late Dr. Sally T. Gershman, Professor of French history, who taught at Georgia Southern from 1980 to 1992.
Criteria:  The purpose of the scholarship is to recognize an outstanding female graduate or undergraduate student who has a special interest in either French or European Women’s history. Criteria for selection include full-time enrollment, academic standing, relevant extracurricular activities, and personal character.  Application is open to students majoring in History at the undergraduate (junior or senior) or graduate level.

Dr. George A. Rogers, Jr. Scholarship in History History: Established in 1983 by an anonymous donor to honor Dr. George A. Rogers, who retired from Georgia Southern in 1983 as Professor of History after more than three decades of teaching and research experience. He was named Professor Emeritus of History and Member, Institute of Arthropodology and Parasitology
Criteria: The purpose of the scholarship is to provide assistance to deserving undergraduate or graduate students in the Department of History.  The Department of History Scholarship Committee sets additional criteria.

 Michael E. Shaw Scholarship in History History: Established in 1985 as a memorial to the late Dr. Michael E. Shaw, a member of the History faculty at Georgia Southern University.
Criteria: The purpose of the scholarship is to provide assistance to deserving undergraduate or graduate students in the Department of History.  The Department of History Scholarship Committee sets additional criteria

Richard S. Beene Scholarship History: Established in 2009 by Georgia Southern University Alumnus, Richard S. Beene. Mr. Beene, a 1973 graduate with a degree in History, was recognized as the 2006 Alumnus of the Year by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Mr. Beene is the President and CEO of The Bakersfield Californian in Bakersfield, CA.
Criteria: The purpose of the scholarship is to recognize outstanding undergraduate students majoring in History with an interest in American History and the Civil War. Eligible applicants must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

R. Frank Saunders Memorial Scholarship History: Established as a memorial to the late Dr. R. Frank Saunders, a member of the History faculty at Georgia Southern University.
Criteria: Award will be given to a junior or senoir level student majoring in history. Eligible applicants must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher and should be enrolled fulltime.

Scholarships Not Available by Application Process

The following scholarships are available only to incoming freshmen, who declare a history major at the time of application and through special invitation from the University’s Office of Admissions. For more information, contact the Office of Admissions.

Maxann Foy Scholarship in History History: Established in 1983 by family members as a memorial to Ms. Foy, a long-time history teacher in Bulloch County schools and community leader in Statesboro.
Criteria: The purpose of the scholarship is to recruit, recognize, and assist outstanding students in the field of history.  Consideration is given to a full-time History Major at any class level.

Julia Floyd Smith Scholarship in History for Women History: Established in 1983 by Dr. Julia Floyd Smith, who taught in the History Department at Georgia Southern for almost two decades, and was named Professor Emerita of History upon her retirement.
Criteria: Scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis each year to outstanding female students who are majoring in history.  Recipients must be of high moral character and must be considered a leader among their peers.  Should no female students qualify for this award in a given year, it may be offered to a male student who satisfies all criteria regarding major, grades and character.

Ruffin Scholarship The Ruffin Scholarship is awarded to incoming freshmen students majoring in English, History, Writing and Linguistics, or Foreign Languages. Students who have been admitted to Georgia Southern who are interested in this award should contact the Scholarship Office for more information.

Non-Scholarship Endowments
George H. Shriver Phi Alpha Theta Book Award History: Established in 1991 by Dr. George H. Shriver, award-winning Emeritus Professor of History, highly published scholar, and former Chair, Religious Studies Minor, who retired after 26 years on the faculty at Georgia Southern.
Criteria: This award is given (without application process) to the student with the highest cumulative grade point average in the History Department, who must be a member of the History Honor Society of Phi Alpha Theta and also a graduating senior. If there are two qualifying students, the award shall be divided equally.
