Research Interests:
In addition to offering courses in early and modern U.S. diplomatic history, and a history of the Cold War, Professor Rakestraw also offers a graduate research seminar in Anglo-American relations. The course introduces students to archival research here in the States via the National Archives and in the U.K via the British Library in London, manuscript sets at the Bodliean Library in Oxford, and document sets at the Public Record Office at Kew Gardens. Professor Rakestraw's publications include For Honor or Destiny: The Anglo-American Crisis over the Oregon Territory (1995); Prologue to Manifest Destiny: Anglo-American Relations in the 1840s (1997) and numerous articles and chapters. He is currently completing a chapter on U.S. Civil War diplomacy for the new Guide to the History of U.S. Foreign Relations and is conducting research for a monograph on the Anglo-American dispute over the C.S.S.
