Teaching & Research Interests:
I am in the process of revising my dissertation, "'At the Midnight Hour': Optimism and Disillusionment in Savannah, 1865-1880," for publication. Specifically, I'm interested in how the coastal city attempted (and ultimately failed) to recover its commanding economic position after the war. An abstract of this study has been published as ""'At the Midnight Hour': Economic Dilemmas and Harsh Realities in Post-Civil War Savannah?" in the Georgia Historical Quarterly (August 2006). This work is the result of a larger interest in urban history and the role the city played in the South. Currently, I am extending my research to the antebellum Savannah, specifically the role that the city's railroads played in the economic growth and urbanization of the city and the tension this economic success spawned between Savannah and its upcountry neighbors. I have also combined my interest in southern history with that of military history, having completed a fellowship at the 2005 West Point Summer Seminar in Military History.
