The Jack N. and
Addie D. Averitt Lecture Series was established in 1990 as a gift to
the Department of History, the Department of Literature and Philosophy
and the Department of Writing and Linguistics at Georgia Southern
University. The purpose of the lectureship is to enhance on-campus
academic and cultural life for students, faculty, and the community.
Published versions of the lectures are available from the University of
Georgia Press.
The 2008 Averitt Lecturer
Dr. Theda Perdue
The 18th Annual Jack N. and Addie D. Averitt Lecture Series will be
held on October 14 and 15, 2008. The theme for this year's series is
"Race and the Cotton States Exposition." The speaker is Dr. Theda
Perdue, who is Distinguished Professor of History at the University of
North Carolina. The schedule for the series is as follows:
Tuesday, October 14, 7:00 p.m. "Beyond the Atlanta Compromise "
Wednesday, October 15, 9:30 a.m. "Vanishing Indians"
Wednesday, October 15, 2:00 p.m. "The Global South "
Lectures are open to the public and held in the Fielding Russell Union Ballroom.
