Postpositions function similar to prepositions except that they follow the object whose case they determine (rather than preceding it).
This does not show up very often, but you need to be able to recognize it when you encounter it so that you can work with it.
GENITIV
= halber (for, on account of, because of, on behalf of, for the
sake of)
= um ... willen (for, because of)
= zufolge (in consequence of, by/in virtue of, owing to, according
to, in pursuance of)
= zugunsten (for the benefit of, in favor of)
= zuungunsten (to the disadvantage of)
Exceptions:
In spoken German, these are often used with DATIVE:
= zufolge, zu(un)gunsten as postpositions
DATIV
= entgegen (up towards)
= gegenüber (opposite of)
= gemäß (according to)
= zufolge (according to, following)
= zu(un)gunsten (for the benefit of, in favor of, to the (dis-)
advantage of)
= zuwider (contrary to, against)
AKKUSATIV
= entlang (along; however, it takes Genitive as a preposition!)
