INTRODUCTION & HELP

To the Instructor | To the User/Student

  • This is an online review grammar for those who have been introduced to the material previously. (It was originally planned for the second year [after approximately 100 hours] of German instruction).
  • The presentation is somewhat more systematic than typical introductory grammar textbooks, however, it is not interactive or communicative (partly due to the medium, and the fact that there are no online partners). It is cut and dry by intent.
  • It is primarily intended to be used in conjunction with in-class instruction. The context is German instruction in the USA, however, it may be useful in many other situations.
  • The topics are set up in such a way that they can be reviewed separately and more or less independently of each other (to some extent; naturally, in terms of a logical and meaningful progression certain aspects should be covered before others).
  • For the most part, items are presented in small segments; these do not necessarily cover all aspects of any given topic.
  • I have tried to use common words in the examples and exercises, and to keep the vocabulary simple (which cuts down on creativity, but there has to be a compromise). There are no word lists or a dictionary since they are available elsewhere (link set up to open in separate window).
  • All material here is under constant development and therefore is subject to change; it may also contain mistakes. No warranties of any kind.
  • Initially, this material was developed for my personal use. I decided to make if freely accessible so that others who might find it useful can benefit from it. This does not oblige me to anything, and by using these pages you agree and abide.
  • The presentation is text-based and not overly fancy, that is, there are no graphics, images, etc. This is on purpose as it serves to insure reasonably fast loading and display.
  • Technologically I have attempted to keep things simple in order to make these pages accessible to as many users as possible (without unreasonable requirements). Nevertheless, some features utilize javascript, "pop-up windows", and/or DHTML. However, this is mostly for convenience, and the site is largely functional even without these capabilities. Otherwise: these pages are optinized for and best experienced with a web browser...

Spelling & Special Characters

  • Spelling does not conform to the reformed spelling. The development of this material began before the spelling reform took effect. The current priority is to complete the content per se. Future updates and revisions may bring spelling in line with the new rules.
  • Special character input in the online exercises: the following table is at the beginning of every Übung-section.

    If you cannot enter special characters directly:
    * Cut & Paste the appropriate character from here: ß - Ä - ä - Ö - ö - Ü - ü
    * Or, for the "ß" use the capital letter "B" (or an "sz"), for umlauts use these transcriptions: ä = ae; Ä = AE; ü = ue etc.
