Foreign Languages: German Section

A MAJOR IN MODERN LANGUAGES:
CONCENTRATION IN GERMAN

Requirements

Double majors, combining Modern Languages/German with another subject, are possible and quite popular. For minors required with a major, combinations with International Studies, Comparative Literature, or another language are excellent choices (the last certainly enhances your marketability for a teaching position). You can find more information about the skills and knowledge you will acquire as a Modern Languages/German major on this page. Here are the complete requirements (including Core) for the B.A..

Samples

Here are two illustrations combining the above information on requirements, the suggested study path, and the course rotation chart.

Assumptions:

As you can see in Chart One, you can be finished exactly within four years if you take at least one German class every semester, with one semester enrolling in two German classes and one semester enrolling in FORL/LING/ANTH 3533 as well (which is also required; see "Year 3" below). However, since many advanced majors often take two upper level classes concurrently (especially during what below are labelled "Year 2" and "Year 3"), it is easily possible to be done within three years (or possibly even fewer; see Chart Two). In other words, you can complete a German major even if you begin only in your second year (or even a little later), provided you proceed as outlined above. (Or you can complete your major earlier, of course).
