SUMMER UNDERGRADUATE CLASSES
(3 semester hours each)
(Intermediate/Advanced Level)

  • SPANISH CONVERSATION AND COMPOSITION
    Study of selected features of the Spanish language, such as uses of ser/estar, present, past, and future tenses, pronouns, and idiomatic expressions, with communicative practice in oral and written forms. Practice with communicative strategies. Communicative activities designed to correspond with authentic situations in Segovia.
     

  • SPANISH LANGUAGE THROUGH LITERATURE
    Study of selected poetic and prose works of Spanish with attention to certain grammatical features and lexical uses, e.g., poems of Antonio Machado with a study of forms of description, choice and use of tense, etc. Special emphasis on literary works which relate to Castile and to the Castilian terrain. Accompanying formal grammatical reviews and daily compositions required.
     

  • SPANISH CULTURE AND CIVILIZATION
    Overview of significant periods of Spanish history, integrated with the art history of the period. Roman, Medieval, Imperial, and Contemporary periods. Classroom lectures, discussions, and presentations supplemented with weekly excursions to historic sites related to the era being studied, e.g., Toledo with Medieval period, El Escorial with Imperial period.

(Advanced level)

  • ADVANCED SPANISH CONVERSATION AND COMPOSITION
    Intensive study of the uses of the Spanish past tense system, the subjunctive, and special pronoun uses. Development of more sophisticated idiomatic uses of Spanish and study of nuances of words. Oral and written assignments based on authentic sources, such as newspapers, magazines, television, live interviews, and communicative experiences of the students.
     

  • SPANISH LANGUAGE THROUGH LITERATURE II
    Study of selected Spanish authors of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, especially of the Generations of 98 and 27, with particular attention to grammatical features and lexical uses in addition to oral and written analysis of literary works.

  • CONTEMPORARY SPANISH SOCIETY
    Study of contemporary Spain, with emphasis on the factors which led up to the Civil War, analysis of the impact of the Franco era, and the evolution of the modern democracy in Spain. Spain's current political and economic situation and the Spanish role in Europe and in world affairs.

SUMMER GRADUATE CLASSES
(3 semester hours each)

  • INTENSIVE LANGUAGE or INTENSIVE LITERATURE

     

    1. LANGUAGE: Structured classroom study of selected structures of the language and independent investigation of applications to the classroom. The investigation may be completed after completion of the Segovia Program.

     

    1. LITERATURE: Structured classroom study of a selected contemporary literary movement and independent investigation of a related topic. The investigation may be completed after completion of the Segovia Program.


  • CIVILIZATION AND CULTURAL METHODS
    Study of contemporary Spanish society. Development of a classroom unit of cultural materials related to one of the following areas: a) Spanish government/political system; b) Spanish economy; c) Spanish society; d) Spanish cultural achievements; e) Spanish popular culture.


SEMESTER
UNDERGRADUATE CLASSES

(3 semester hours each)
(During the FALL or SPRING semester)

  • STRUCTURE OF THE SPANISH LANGUAGE
    Analysis of grammatical and structural features of the Spanish language, formal written essays, and oral presentations in Spanish.
     
  • SPANISH CURRENT EVENTS THROUGH THE MEDIA
    Studies of Spanish political, social, and cultural events through reading Spanish newspapers and magazines, viewing television programs and films by Spanish directors, and access to Internet sources. Discussions, oral and written reports.
     
  • THE GENERATION OF 1927
    Study of selected Spanish authors active at this important time of Spanish history.
     
  • SPANISH CIVILIZATION THROUGH ART HISTORY
    Detailed study and analysis of Spanish history and culture as portrayed through Spanish art and architecture. Lecture and discussion in class and at selected museums and monuments which are illustrative of the periods studied.
     
  • SPANISH ECONOMY AND THE EUROPEAN UNION
    The functioning of the European Union with particular attention to Spain's integration and role in the European Union.
    (Optional internship component included as part of this class).
