Catalog Description

A general introduction to the nature and structure of language and its role in society.

Prerequisites: None

 

Course Outline

  • What Is Language? Language Universals and What We Know about Language.

  • Morphology: The Words of Language.

  • Syntax: The Sentence Patterns of Language.

  • Semantics: The Meanings of Language.

  • Phonetics: The Sounds of Language.

  • Phonology: The Sound Patterns of Language.

  • Language in Society: Dialects, Standard Languages, Pidgins, Creoles, Slangs, Jargons, Language and Sexism.

  • Language Change: How and Why Languages Change, Historical Reconstruction.

  • Writing: The History of Writing, Modern Writing Systems, Writing and Speech.

  • Language Acquisition: Stages in Language Acquisition, Theories of Child Language Acquisition, Theories of Second Language Acquisition.

  • Human Processing: Brain, Mind, and Language.

  • Computer Processing of Human Language

Student Activities

Students will research and report on articles they have read about specific topics in the study of language. Homework assignments which include written problems to solve as well as oral reports on language issues will be given regularly. In addition, written quizzes and exams will be administered to evaluate students.
