Dr. McGrath's current research includes an edition of Diego de San
Pedro’s Cárcel de amor,
in collaboration with Dr. José Manuel Hidalgo.
While his interests are wide ranging, they
currently revolve around the following areas: cultural studies,
comedia studies, and Don
Quijote. He describes his approach to the
texts as one that is based upon a literary, historical,
and critical framework. He is particularly interested in
what literature can teach us about society and issues relevant
to it, such as power, the role of women, marginalized voices,
and religion. When he teaches a course on the comedia,
for example, he encourages his students to think critically
about the characters and themes, and to apply this information
to the socio-historical milieu of the playwright’s
world. In addition, he discusses the extra-literary circumstances
surrounding the plays: playhouses, actors, staging, and
economics.
Dr. McGrath is the Editor of Juan de la Cuesta Hispanic Monographs and the Interviews Editor for
Comedia Performance, the journal
of the Association for Hispanic Classical Theater.
Dr. McGrath is a permanent
deacon in the Diocese of Savannah.
