. The Department of Communication Arts in the College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences invites nominations and applications for the position of assistant professor of Multimedia Communication. Georgia Southern University (www.georgiasouthern.edu), a member institution of the University System of Georgia and a Carnegie Doctoral/Research University, is one of Georgia’s premier universities. A residential university serving 18,000 students in fall 2009, Georgia Southern is recognized for providing all of the benefits of a major university with the feeling of a much smaller college. Founded in 1906, the University offers more than 100 campus-based and online degree programs at the baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral levels through eight colleges. The nearly 700 acre park-like campus is located in Statesboro, a classic Main Street community near historic Savannah and Hilton Head Island.

Within this setting, multimedia communication is part of a 750-major, multi-disciplinary program offering degrees in journalism, multimedia communication, public relations, communication studies and theatre.  The multimedia communication area offers tracks in information and production, along with the new digital film emphasis.  Graduates from both news and video production have achieved excellent professional success.  Multimedia Communication operates highly regarded internship programs, and maintains a local cable TV channel and student radio station.  The successful faculty member will join a growing program seeking ACEJMC accreditation.

Position Description. Reporting to the Department Chair, the Assistant Professor of Multimedia Communication will teach a variety of introductory and advanced video and/or film production and editing courses, and advise students.  The Assistant Professor will also engage in scholarship, either producing competition-level film or video projects or publishing in peer-reviewed journals.  The position is a 9-month appointment, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
 
Required Qualifications:

  1. MFA or Ph.D. degree in broadcasting/multimedia communication or a closely-related field.  Applicants pursuing the Ph.D. must be within one year of degree completion by August 1, 2010, and complete the degree by August 1, 2011.
  2. A minimum of one year teaching experience at the college/university level.
  3. Experience working or teaching in a convergent media environment.
  4. Demonstrated commitment to teaching, scholarship and professional service.
  5. Excellent communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Ability to assist with digital film and film studies courses.
  2. Ability to assist with audio courses.

  1. Ph.D. in journalism or a closely-related discipline, or within one year of completion by August 1, 2010 and must complete Ph.D. by August 1, 2011.
  2. A minimum of one year’s experience teaching in a college/university setting.
  3. Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching, scholarship and professional service.
  4. Experience with convergent media.
  5. Excellent communication skills.

  1. Professional experience

  3. Interest in and experience advising a student organization

Required Qualifications:

  1. Master’s degree in journalism or a closely-related discipline by August 1, 2010
  2. Minimum of five year’s significant professional journalism experience
  3. Some college/university-level teaching experience
  4. Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and professional service
  5. Excellent communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Ph.D. in journalism or a closely related discipline
  2. Media management experience
  3. Editing and/or design experience
  4. Familiarity with issues and applications relating to convergent media
  5. Internship management experience
  6. Experience teaching a diverse student body
