Journalism Major

Politics...crime...medicine...the economy...education...the environment..

The understanding of these evolving issues, and more, is vital to all our efforts to cope with and adapt to the complexities of our culture, and journalists meet much of that demand in their daily pursuits.

To that end, the Journalism program at Georgia Southern includes newspapers, specialty publications, magazines and the fast-growing on-line publications. For those seeking careers in public relations, business, and other professional fields, the communication and critical thinking skills required of the program can prove essential.

The Journalism core curriculum is strongly grounded in the liberal arts, while the major courses provide students with a solid balance of the practical and theoretical aspects of the discipline.

The substantial professional experience shared by the Journalism faculty helps prepare students for a competitive workplace, and GSU alumni are working throughout the Southeast as editors, reporters, columnists, and photographers at daily newspapers large and small, with industry newsletters and special interest magazines, with Internet publications, and in public relations.

Although the Journalism program is not officially affiliated with the university's student-managed magazine and twice-weekly newspaper, faculty members currently serve as advisors to the publications.

Journalism students are encouraged to pursue their interests as paid staff members with The George-Anne newspaper and The Southern Reflector magazine, where they write, edit, and manage the publications on a daily basis and make all final decisions.

The George-Anne won third- (1997) and first-place (1998) awards in General Excellence in statewide competition sponsored by the Georgia Press Association, and The Southern Reflector was awarded All-American Magazine status in 1997 and 1998 by the Associated Collegiate Press.

Journalism students can also obtain professional experience and academic credit through approved internships with a variety of media, and they are urged to apply for numerous paid internships. independent of the university, that are available each summer.
