Communication Arts Major

SOCIETY OF COMMUNICATION SCHOLARS

The newest student organization in the Communication Arts department is the Society of Communication Scholars, (SOCS). The organization was established in February of 2003 with Dr. Patrick Wheaton, Assistant Professor of Communication Studies, as the advisor.

“There had been some interest for a few years about forming a student organization for Communication Studies majors. We already had organizations for the other majors such as PRSSA and Theatre & Performance,” Wheaton said. “As the newest speech faculty member I was asked to take on the task of organizing this group in Fall 2002.”

Membership in the group is open to students from all department majors. “We amended the Constitution and bylaws to expand membership to any major in the Communication Arts department after students in other areas had expressed interest,” Wheaton said.

Students must major or minor in Communication Studies, broadcasting, journalism, public relations,or theater to be a member. If a student is registered for at least six credit hours they may also become a member.

SOCS members regularly participate in such activities as homecoming’s Sculpt-It-For-Hunger and conduct APA style workshops for student who have to write research papers. Members annually attend the Southern States Communication Association.
