Scarlet Tanager

The Artist:

Athos Menaboni worked his way to the United States from Italy in 1920 as a crew member on a freighter. He lived in Virginia, New York, and Florida until 1928, when he met and married Rome, Georgia native Sara Arnold. From their North Georgia home, Mr. Menaboni produced paintings of more than 750 species of American birds. His works can be found in the DuPont, Calloway, Marshall Fields, and Robert Woodruff collections, as well as in major museums in Japan, Belgium, Scotland, Italy, South Africa, and the United States. His book, Menaboni Birds was named one of the best 50 books of 1950 by the American Graphic Society. He was a 1983 recipient of a Governor’s Award in the Arts.
