The Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art (BFSDoA) is a community of professional artists, art historians, art educators and emerging student talents. Our department has a reputation for encouraging students to discover and develop their personal voice in the arts—one that is supported by superior technical skills. Faculty commitment to student success is unequivocally one of the department’s greatest attributes. Another is our outstanding studio, research, and gallery facilities that provide the necessary academic setting for a significant learning experience. The positive environment students themselves create as they work side-by-side to process, investigate, explore, and develop as arts professionals completes our spirit. While people and place certainly influence the achievement of each individual so does an awareness of “the bigger picture.” In all that we do, we never lose sight of the role the visual arts play in our culture, and our function as art educators to convey this responsibility. Art serves to communicate, inspire, express, document, and reveal. Contemporary artists and scholars must uphold their own set of ethics and individual aesthetics while opening their minds to new experiences and perspectives. However we might phrase it—our routine, our mantra, or our modus operandi—our responsibility to convey this philosophy is consistently evident in our lectures, critiques, studio practices, teaching practicum and community projects. Knowing why art is created and its impact on civilization is what distinguishes our students and ensures their success. We are an inspired and thriving arts community and sincerely invite you to join us in an unparalleled learning experience. --Patricia Carter, Department Chair
