Bachelor of Fine Arts in Jewelry (B.F.A.): 126 hours Students in the Jewelry and Metalsmithing concentration use both traditional and nontraditional materials to create works that take the form of personal adornment and unique sculptural objects. Jewelry/Metals students learn the basic skills of fabrication, casting, forming, and surface embellishment, such as enameling. The goal of the Jewelry and Metalsmithing program is to develop artists with a full understanding of historical and contemporary metal processes who reveal this knowledge in their personal work. The Jewelry Guild is the BFSDoA student organization that offers opportunities for commissions, specialty workshops, visiting artists and exhibitions of student work.
Courses Offered in the Jewelry Concentration: ART 1236 Jewelry I An introduction to the tools, materials and techniques of jewelry/metal design. Students will explore fabrication, surface embellishment, stone-setting and finishing techniques while demonstrating creativity and understanding of the media. Prerequisite: ART 1030 or Permission of the Instructor. ART 2236 Jewelry II An exploration of intermediate level techniques of jewelry/metal design. Students will investigate casting and wax-working techniques while developing a personal direction in the discipline. Prerequisite: ART 1236 or Permission of the Instructor. ART 3236 Jewelry III Advanced students will explore metal-forming techniques such as forging, raising and fold-forming in the creation of small sculptural objects and jewelry. Students will demonstrate proficiency in the media while developing a unique personal style. Prerequisite: ART 2236 or Permission of Instructor. ART 3337 Enameling Students will explore various enameling processes including cloisonne, champleve, Limoge and basse-taille. Students will also investigate the use of color in the creations of contemporary jewelry and small sculptural objects. Prerequisite: ART 1236 or Permission of Instructor. ART 4392 Problems in Jewelry Intensive individual research in a specific area of jewelry. Students will demonstrate proficiency in the media while developing a unique personal style.
