The Graphic Communications Management major supports the human resource development needs of the graphic communications fields. This major offers students an opportunity to develop skills and knowledge that will prepare them for entry-level management positions. Students will develop planning and organizational skills as well as decision-making capabilities. Students will also refine technical abilities through the application of tools, materials,and processes used in various graphic media systems. Laboratory experiences will reinforce communications, math, science, and technical concepts while challenging students' problem-solving abilities.
Career Opportunities: Entry-level positions leading to sales, customer service, management, scheduling, cost estimating, quality-control supervision, and department supervision.
Changing Majors? Many students are still looking for that major that fits their personality and learning style. A good course to start with is Desktop Publishing. This course has practical application to many professional areas and provides an opportunity to experience this career area.
Recommended High School Subjects: Students planning to enter this major should complete a college preparatory diploma. Academic subjects with strong emphasis on communication and analytical skills are helpful. An awareness of computer hardware and software with keyboarding skills is also beneficial.
Some high schools have Graphic Communications courses which provide the most directly applicable preparation for this major; however, Technology Education courses, art and student publication (yearbook or newspaper) also effectively provide knowledge development.
Program Goals: For this progressive professional major, graduates of the Graphic Communications Management program will receive preparation to enable them to:
- demonstrate knowledge of the terminology common to graphic communications;
- demonstrate the ability to formulate and solve technical problems common to graphic communications;
- have a working familiarity with methods of effective management;
- demonstrate knowledge of the various print production methods and the technical sequences involved;
- demonstrate knowledge of printing estimating and production planning of a job in the most economically feasible way;
- demonstrate knowledge of the laws, ethics, and trade customs associated with the printing industry;
- demonstrate a working knowledge of how the computer can be used in a typical printing business;
- demonstrate knowledge of the various occupational health environmental issues affecting the printing industry;
- demonstrate knowledge of the occupational opportunities available in the printing industry;
- demonstrate a breadth of knowledge related to the technical aspect of graphics and printing;
- successfully complete at least one internship according to requirements stated in the program internship manual;
- articulate aspects of management related to graphic communication businesses,
recall information and apply it to new situations;
- develop an appreciate for life long learning and actively engage in continuing education opportunities;
- demonstrate a willingness to work, developed the habits of work and a desire to go beyond expectations, and
- seek employment in the graphics/printing fields and become employed.
