The following scholarship opportunities are offered through Georgia Southern University. Award amounts vary depending on the scholarship and availability of funds. Nationally competitive scholarships and fellowships are not listed here. Students interested in applying for these scholarships should contact the department under which the scholarship is offered.

General Scholarships

Ruffin Humanities Scholarship
Students must be majoring in English, Philosophy, History, Foreign Language and Religious Studies. The students must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 and be considered a full time student. Students deemed to be in need of financial assistance and have undergraduate status are eligible. Scholarship is renewable.

Dr. Gary B. Sullivan Scholarship in Irish Studies
Award is given to a junior or senior obtaining a minor in Irish Studies who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 and is enrolled full time during the award period. The applicant must have completed an application form and provided two letters of recommendation from professors who can attest to the applicant's academic excellence and personal character.

Art Department

Betty Foy Sanders Scholarship
Scholarship will be awarded on a competitive basis each year to outstanding students pursuing a degree in art, fine arts, or art education. Selection will be made in the spring and the scholarship will be applied towards each recipient's tuition and fees during the upcoming academic year. While the scholarships amounts may vary annually, it is assumed that each year three scholarships will be given with the minimum amount of $3,000 awarded to the most deserving, talented art student, $2,000 to the first runner-up and $1,000 to the second runner-up. All recipients must be at the sophomore, junior or senior level. Seniors who receive the scholarship must have at least one academic semester remaining before graduation. Recipients must have a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA. If the student has a superior artistic talent and meets all criteria except the minimum cumulative GPA, an exception may be made.

Rosalind D. Ragans Art Scholarship
Student must be an outstanding and deserving art major. Seniors who receive this scholarship must have at least one academic semester remaining before graduation.

Robert J. Focht Memorial Drawing and ROTC Scholarship
A drawing award is to be presented to one of two students who show a continued love for art, demonstrating creativity, sensitivity, strive for excellence and have completed Drawing II. (1/2 goes to ROTC)

Carolyn Joyner Memorial Scholarship
First preference shall be given to a Masters in Fine Arts major with a deep interest in textile art. Textile art is defined as historical preservation of textile art, historical fashion design of textile art, and national and international textile art. Second preference shall be given to a Masters of Fine Arts major that closely resembles that of the criteria listed above. The student must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better. The Scholarship Committee appointed to select the recipient shall consist of two faculty members of the Department of Art and a member of the Proctor family.

Jeff Nichols Art Memorial Scholarship
Awards are given to students following the Art Department's annual student art show. Awards are considered to be more of a prize than a scholarship.

Bruno Bak Art Scholarship
Awarded to a rising senior majoring in art with demonstrated talent in the area of graphic arts or ceramics. Financial need must be present, GPA must be maintained at 3.0 or higher and recipient must be resident of the United States.

History Department

Dr. George A. Rogers, Jr. Scholarship in History
Purpose of the scholarship is to provide assistance to deserving undergraduate or graduate students in the Department of History. The Department of History Scholarship committee sets additional criteria.

Julia Floyd Smith Scholarship in History for Women
Scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis each year to outstanding female students who are majoring in history. Recipients must be enrolled full time and must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0. Recipients must be of high moral character and must be considered a leader among their peers. Should no female students qualify for this award in a given year, it may be offered to a male student who satisfies all criteria regarding major, grades and character.

Maxann Foy Scholarship in History
Consideration should be given to a full-time history major at any class level.

Michael E. Shaw Scholarship in History
Purpose of the scholarship is to provide assistance to deserving undergraduate or graduate students in the Department of History. The Department of History Scholarship committee sets additional criteria.

Sally T. Gershman Memorial Scholarship
Criteria for selection include a full-time enrollment, academic standing, relevant extracurricular activities, and personal character. Application is open to students majoring in history at the undergraduate (junior or senior standing) or graduate level. The scholarship is to recognize an outstanding female graduate or undergraduate student who has special interest in either French or European Women's history.

Cultural Heritage Center Endowment
Available to graduate students with a 3.0 or higher undergraduate GPA who are pursuing master degrees in one of the following areas: Anthropology, History or Sociology. Student must be committed to research and study that focused on a significant dimension of the cultural heritage of the South.

Communication Arts Department

Dorothy F. Lee Scholarship
Criteria include the applicant's potential for service to the Theatre Program, demonstrated talents, and motivating interests related to theatre. Also included are the applicant's academic record, financial need and personal character. The applicant must be a full time student majoring in theatre and be an undergraduate and/or graduate student.

Theatre Scholarship
Purpose of scholarship is to award and recognize students participating in the Theatre Program. The Theatre Scholarship committee sets additional criteria.

Susan Bacon MacLachlan Memorial Scholarship
Scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis each year to outstanding female students enrolled in the Georgia Southern University Department of Communication Arts. Students must be rising juniors (minimum 60 hours) or seniors. Students must be enrolled full-time at the time they receive the scholarship and must maintain full-time enrollment throughout the award period. Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 in order to apply. Students applying for this scholarship must be of high moral character and must be considered leaders among their peers. Selection will be made without regard to age, race, area of residency, marital status, or religious preference. Should all other qualifications be considered equal, financial need will be the deciding factor. If, in any given year, no female students qualify for this scholarship, it may be offered to a male student who satisfies all criteria regarding major, class level, grades and character.

Jenny Lynn Anderson Scholarship in Communication Arts
Student must be pursuing any degree offered by the Communication Arts Department. Student must be enrolled full time at the time they receive the scholarship and must maintain full time enrollment throughout the award period. Student must remain in good academic standing with the University and the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and must maintain a GPA of at least 3.0. Financial aid will be a deciding factor. The Scholarship shall be renewable as long as the student continues to meet the established criteria and remain in good academic standing. The scholarship committee will be appointed by the Chair of the Department of Communication Arts.

Clarence W. McCord Scholarship
The scholarship may be offered to students who are pursuing any degree in the Communication Arts department. Students must be enrolled full time at the time they receive the scholarship and must maintain full time enrollment throughout the award period. Student must remain in good academic standing with the University and the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and must maintain a GPA of at least 3.0. Financial aid will be a deciding factor. The Scholarship shall be renewable as long as the student continues to meet the established criteria. The Scholarship committee will be appointed by the Chair of Communication Arts.

Laura Dyar Journalism Scholarship
The scholarship will be offered to students pursuing a major in journalism whose GPA is 3.0 or higher. The scholarship is renewable for a four year period. The scholarship committee will be appointed by the Chair of the Department of Communication Arts.

Broadcasting Scholarship
Awarded to Broadcasting majors with a 3.0 or higher GPA.

Literature and Philosophy Department

Woody Powell Scholarship
Students must be majoring in English literature, be of any class level and enrolled full time during the award period. A committee in the Department of Literature and Philosophy shall select the scholar.

Fielding Russell Scholarship
Students must be majoring in English literature, enrolled full time during the award period and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. A committee in the Department of Literature and Philosophy shall select the scholar.

Political Science Department

Bo and Gloria Ginn Scholarship
Applicant's academic record, demonstrated talents, personal character, relevant extra-curricular activities and motivating interest should be taken into consideration. The scholarship is open to students at any class level majoring in the field of political science. Qualified students vying for the scholarships must submit a completed application to the designed contact in the Department of Political Science by the application deadline. The Department of Political Science scholarship committee will make the selection.

Internship: Available for students who are residents of Georgia and accepted into the Political Science Department's internship program. Students must agree to intern with a member of the Georgia Congressional delegation in Washington, D.C.

John H. Daily Political Science Scholarship
Applicants must be a beginning graduate student, regularly admitted to a graduate program in the political science department, and for whom at least two years have passed since being awarded an undergraduate degree. The award of the scholarship will make a great economic difference between being able or unable to begin graduate school. The student must have high academic credentials.

William Wallace, Jr. and Dr. Lana Wachniak Scholarship
Applicants must be pursuing a degree offered by the political science department in the area of criminal justice or justice studies. Students must be enrolled full time at the time they receive the scholarship, be of junior status and must maintain full time enrollment throughout the award period. Students must remain in good standing with the University and with the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and must maintain a 3.0 GPA. First preference shall be given to female students or minority students. Should all other qualifications be considered equal, financial aid will be the deciding factor. Students applying for the scholarship must be of high moral character and must be considered a leader among their peers. Selection will be made without regard to age, race, area of residency, marital status, or religious preference. The scholarship shall be renewable as long as the student continues to meet the established criteria and remains in good academic standing with the University.

Ron Pye Alumni Scholarship
First preference shall go to a female student in the political science department who is a single mother of a child under the age of 18. Second preference shall go to any female student within the political science department. Third preference shall go to any political science major. Student may be at any class level with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better.

Lee and Rebecca Davis Pre-Law Scholarship
Student must be pursuing a career in law regardless of major. Students must have an unadjusted GPA of at least 3.5 and have enough credits to qualify as a junior when the award begins. The student may be required to submit an essay stating why he/she wishes to pursue a career in law.

Senator Paul D. Coverdell Memorial Scholarship
Student must be accepted into the Political Science Department's internship program and agree to intern with a Georgia member of Congress for a summer internship.

Psychology Department

George Thomas Memorial Scholarship
Applicants must be a graduate student in the Psychology Department.

Sociology and Anthropology Department

Cultural Heritage Center Endowment
Available to graduate students with a 3.0 or higher undergraduate GPA who are pursuing master degrees in one of the following areas: Anthropology, History or Sociology. Student must be committed to research and study that focused on a significant dimension of the cultural heritage of the South.

Victor, Rebecca and Richard Persico Scholarship in Anthropology
Student may be at any undergraduate level and must carry a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 at the time of the award and maintain the GPA throughout the award period. Students must maintain full time status throughout the award period. A committee comprised of the department chair and three anthropology faculty members shall make the selection.

Georgia Southern University Foundation Music Scholarships
Set by the Department of Music.

William J. Deal Memorial Scholarship
Award is based on the student's academic record, his or her dedication to the very highest standard in musical performance, and the general conduct of the recipient related to student life and activities.

T.J. Morris Company Scholarship
Award is based on the student's academic record, demonstrated talents, personal character, relevant extracurricular activities and motivating interest. The scholarship will be open to students majoring in any field in music at any class level.

James Arthur and Jesse Newton Bunce Scholarship
Available to students pursuing a degree in Music. First preference will be given to music majors participating in the Statesboro / Georgia Southern Symphony. If, in any given year, a music major participating in the Statesboro / Georgia Southern Symphony is not found, then the scholarship may go to any music majors.

Esther Wilburn Barnes Piano Scholarship
Students applying for scholarships must be pursuing a music degree with an emphasis in piano. Students may be at any class level , although it is preferred that they be at the junior or senior level. Students must be enrolled full time at the time they receive the scholarship and must maintain full time enrollment throughout the award period. Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 in order to apply. Recipients must maintain grades of the minimum or higher throughout the award period. Students applying for this scholarship must be of high moral character and must be considered leaders among their peers. Selection will be made without regard to age, race, area of residency, marital status, or religious preference. Should all other factors be considered equal, financial need will be the deciding factor.

Robert E. Gerken Woodwind Scholarship
Applicant must be majoring with a primary instrument in the woodwind area. The Department of Music scholarship committee sets additional criteria.

Dorothy Moore Scholarship
Applicants must be deserving string education majors with a minimum of 3.0 cumulative GPA while participating in the string section of the Statesboro / Georgia Southern Symphony. Recipient will be selected by the orchestra director and the GSU Music Department head.

Douglas Graves Symphony Strings Performance Scholarship
Scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis each year to an incoming student or a continuing student. In addition to majoring in music and participating in the Statesboro / Georgia Southern Symphony by playing the violin, viola, cello or double bass, recipients must exhibit leadership qualities and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above. The recipient will also be expected to participate in chamber and recital performances and assist when needed with the Symphony Guild String Program. There are no restrictions regarding area of residency, marital status, race, religion, gender or age.

Cohen and Newell D. Anderson Memorial Scholarship
Scholarship provides recognition and financial reward for outstanding students enrolled in any degree program with the GSU Department of Music. Applicants must be enrolled full time and must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. Applicants must be of high moral character and must be considered leaders among their peers. Scholarships will be awarded without regard to age, race, area of residency, marital status, or religious preference. Should all other factors be considered equal, financial need will be the deciding factor.

George R. and Emma T. Kelly Scholarship
Each applicant must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better and may be at any class level. Each applicant must be pursuing a music major and performance with an emphasis in piano. Each applicant's academic record, personal character, relevant extracurricular activities and professional goals for the future will be considered. Students will be awarded scholarships based on merit and talent exhibited. There are no restrictions regarding residency, marital status, race, religion, gender, or age. If all qualifications are considered equal, financial need will be the deciding factor.

Carol Carter Music Scholarship
Students must demonstrate outstanding criteria, outstanding musical talent and academic excellence. After the initial award, students must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA to continue to receive the scholarship. Students must demonstrate service to others and be of the highest integrity. Students must submit recommendations from the appropriate clergy and community leaders.

Gerald H. Braz Memorial Music Scholarship
Student must be a rising sophomore who maintains a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. Student must be a full time music major and must have completed normal freshman-level course work and be making normal progress towards graduation in the major. Student must demonstrate the highest musical, academic and personal standards. The Music Department's scholarship committee will solicit nominations from the faculty and select the recipient(s) from the names submitted. Should the Music Department's Scholarship Committee not find a qualified student, the funds will remain in the Foundation account.

Statesboro-GSU Symphony Association Scholarship
Student must play an instrument in the Statesboro / Georgia Southern Symphony.

Presser Foundation
Student is selected by the Department of Music and name is submitted to the Presser Foundation. Award goes to an outstanding rising senior.

Dorothy Lucille Pevey Music Education Scholarship
Award goes to Music Education majors.

Warren F. Jones /Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Scholarship
Available to Junior Music Majors with a 3.0 GPA or better. Recipient must be majoring in music composition.

Department of Music Scholarship Fund
Available to Junior Music Majors with a 3.0 GPA or better. Recipient must be majoring in music composition.

Statesboro / Georgia Southern Symphony Strings Scholarship
Recipient must be an entering freshman or transfer student with a minimum GPA of 3.0 or better. The recipient must agree to be a member of the Statesboro-Georgia Southern Symphony and may pursue any academic major. An overall GPA of 3.0 must be maintained during the award period.
