How
did you decide on Psychology as your major?
I wanted to study
Psychology since middle school. Psychology is a subject that always seems
to allow me to think outside the box. It is a major that gives students
the opportunity to follow various career paths. Students can find many
job opportunities with a Bachelor's degree, including work with private
companies, law firms and the government and military. In addition, they
can apply for graduate school to specialize in teaching, counseling, consulting
and conducting research.
What
do you like best about your major?
All the psychology professors. I enjoy
doing research with my mentors. Many of the psychology professors are
very friendly. Most importantly, they are always available to help students
with classwork, research, graduate school preparation, etc. The psychology
department really show their students how much they care about their career
after graduation by encouraging them to present their research at major
conferences or writing recommendation letters for graduate school.
What's
the best academic experience you have had at GSU?
Working with my mentors on independent research projects and having the
opportunity to travel and present my research at professional conferences.
My psychology mentors really spend their time and effort to guide me with
all my research projects. They are willing to tell me what areas need
improvement and what areas are my strengths.
What
advice would you give to an underclassman considering your major?
I would suggest studying hard and making good grades
your freshmen year, because a couple of bad opening semesters can ruin
a GPA and a student's chances of being admitted into graduate school.
Secondly, try to gain as much research experience as possible as an undergraduate,
especially if you plan on attending graduate school in the future.
What
do you plan/hope to do with your major after you graduate?
I just got accepted
in the UGA Applied Psychology Doctoral Program with an emphasis in Industrial/Organizational
Psychology. I will begin my first year as a graduate student in Fall 2007.
Hopefully, upon completion of my doctoral degree, I will work in either
an academic or applied setting.
