On September 30, the Georgia Southern Department of Music will host a daylong residency by Dr. John Sampen and Mr. Mark Bunce of Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Beginning at 1:00, Dr. Sampen will give a performance master class in the Carol A. Carter Recital Hall of the Foy Music Buildling. GSU students Alex Sellers, Josh Duncan, and Anton Hughes will be featured in this workshop. Concurrently, Mr. Bunce will present a workshop for students in music technology in Foy 3043. Assisted by Mr. Bunce as sound and computer engineer, Dr. Sampen will give a free recital at 7:30 PM in Carter Hall. The program, entitled Mysterious Morning is a multi-disciplinary presentation and is designed as an exciting, seamless musical experience featuring projected visuals, interactive electronics and theatrical activities. Actual composer voices are heard via recorded readings and poetry, thus bringing the composer “spiritually” into the concert space.
An internationally acclaimed saxophone soloist and teacher, Dr. Sampen is Distinguished Research Artist Professor at BGSU. He has commissioned and premiered more than 80 pieces of music by many of today’s most prominent and cutting-edge composers. Mr. Bunce is a composer, and the recording engineer/electronics technician for the MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music and the director of Recording Services at BGSU. He has also engineered programs for public radio and composed and engineered soundtracks for corporate videos and PBS signatures.
For further information, contact Dr. Carolyn Bryan at 478.5669 or cbryan@georgiasouthern.edu. Dr. Sampen’s performance is made possible by a grant from the Campus Life Enrichment Committee and support from the College of Information Technology.

Psy D Program Earns Recognition from ASPPB/National Register

The Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards/National Register Committee recently accepted Georgia Southern’s Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) program to be listed in their current edition of Doctoral Psychology Programs Meeting Designation Criteria. The decision was based on materials the program submitted in January 2009. The program’s listing is an indicator of quality and the listing serves as an important resource for potential graduate students. To read a specific statement describing what this designation means for graduates of the program, please consult the Department’s website at http://class.georgiasouthern.edu/psychology/psyd.php.
The program’s listing on the ASPPB/National Register website reflects the efforts the Psychology Department is making towards earning accreditation from the American Psychological Association (APA). The Psy.D. program will be eligible for evaluation by the APA as early as Fall of 2011. At this point, the program’s first cohort of students will have entered their final year of study.
The mission of the Psy.D. program is to prepare students to become clinical psychologists. The program has a specific focus on training students to work with rural, underserved populations. For more information about the doctoral program, please contact Dr. Jackson Rainer (Director of Clinical Training) at JRainer@GeorgiaSouthern.edu or Dr. John Murray (Department Chair) at JMurray@GeorgiaSouthern.edu.
