GSU-NOW at Rhodes

*GSU-NOW Vice President and Secretary, Reuben Hayslett and Emily Haymans, along with Vagina Monologues cast members Kadia Scott and Molly Scott, presented a panel for the ACS Women and Gender Studies Conference this March at Rhodes College in Memphis, TN. Their presentation focused on how GSU-NOW's organization plans and executes the highly successful charity benefit performance of The Vagina Monologues in a rural Southern environment. Hayslett, Haymans, Scott and Scott networked with other Women and Gender Studies programs across the country and had the amazing opportunity to hear Angela Davis deliver a speech about feminism in the twenty-first century.

GSU-NOW has been a strong presence on the GSU campus for the last few years. They have produced the Vagina Monologues four of the last five years with increasing success. GSU-NOW was excited that the 2009 performance sold out the Performing Arts Center for the first time in GSU-NOW history. Each year the group donates all the proceeds from production to a local charity. This year's recipient is the Statesboro Regional Sexual Assault Center. The group also attends conferences and supports campus activities like the Clothesline Project and the World Aids Day Events.

Free Food or Free Speech?
Georgia Southern Student Media to Host First Amendment Free Food Festival

Georgia Southern Student Media will host the First Amendment Free Food Festival (FAFFF) on April 23, 2009 from 11 AM to 2 PM outside the Williams Center on the university's campus. The FAFFF will demonstrate to faculty, staff, students and community what it is like to give up their First Amendment Rights of religion, speech, press, assembly and government petition. The goal is to expand the knowledge of the campus community about the First Amendment and to make people aware of their rights, said Keith Warburg, Student Media executive editor.
The First Amendment guarantees five freedoms -- freedoms of speech, press, religion, assembly and the right to redress the government for grievances. At the event attendees can choose to enter the fenced off courtyard, a no freedom zone, but only after signing away their First Amendment rights. Once their rights have been signed away attendees are welcome to the free food. Attendees can stay as long as they like, but must follow the instruction of the goon squad once they enter the zone. These enforcers will make sure that no one inside the zone is using any of their first amendment rights. Those not complying with the rules will be asked to leave. In addition to the goon squad, there will be staged performance pieces designed to demonstrate what happens when First Amendment rights are taken away. The FAFFF is sponsored by Georgia Southern's Office of Student Activities, Student Government Association (SGA), the Communication Arts Department, the Theatre and Performance Program, the Multicultural Student Center and GSU Mens Rugby. The free food will be provided by 23 area restaurants and businesses.

Pulitzer Prize Winning Poet

C.K. Williams, a major figure in contemporary American poetry, will be on campus next week. He will be reading from his poetry at the PAC, 7:30 pm, Thursday, February 19.

C.K. Williams' career spans forty years, from his first book, Lies, (1969) to his most recent, Collected Poems (2006). In between, his book The Singing won the National Book Award for 2003; Repair was awarded the 2000 Pulitzer Prize and the Los Angeles Times Book Award, and Flesh and Blood received the 1988 National Book Critics Circle Award.

He is an extraordinary poet, known particularly for writing poems with very long, sweeping lines and meditative rhythms, and he is often compared to Whitman in that respect. His subjects are wide-ranging, from outraged social protest to delicate love lyrics and from gritty, urban settings to quiet pastorals.

Recently he was awarded the Twentieth Annual Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize, an honor given to an American poet in recognition of extraordinary accomplishment. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2003, and teaches in the Writing Program at Princeton University.

The reading is free and open to the public.

“MIGRATION” BY PROFESSOR JANE PLEAK ON DISPLAY IN THE LEGENDS GALLERY AT THE AVERITT CENTER FOR THE ARTS
October 3 – November 2, 2008

Migration, a ceramics sculpture exhibition by Georgia Southern University Professor of Ceramics, Jane Pleak, will be on display in the Legends Gallery at Averitt Center for the Arts. The exhibition opening is part of downtown Statesboro’s First Friday celebration from 5 – 7 PM on October 3, 2008, will remain on display until November 2, 2008.

Pleak is inspired by the migration and transition of nature. In her ceramic sculptures, she transforms these transitory moments into frozen moments… capturing time. The exploration of this stopping point where bird figures stop and converse takes place on the top of ceramic bowls. ‘What do they talk about, Where are the headed,’ questions Pleak. Each form offers Pleak’s view on this migration as birds fly through her creative life and stop for a moment to do all the things we do – discuss the life in all of its absurd wonder.

The Averitt Center for the Arts is located at 33 East Main Street, Statesboro, GA 30458. Hours are Monday – Friday from 10 AM – 7 PM and Saturday from 10 AM – 4 PM. For more information on the Averitt Center for the Arts, please visit www.averittcenterforthearts.org.

A Night of Opera: An Evening of Operetta

The Georgia Southern University opera department is proud to present their 5th annual Night of Opera on September 26, 2008 at 7:30 in the Averitt Center for the Arts in downtown Statesboro.
With performances by Georgia Southern Faculty and Alumni, the program highlights some of the greatest moments in operettas “which means you still have the pretty singing of opera, but no one has to die,” remarks Dr. Arikka Gregory, director of Georgia Southern Opera. With selections from operettas by Jacques Offenbach, Johann Strauss, Sir Arthur Sullivan, Sigmund Romberg, and Victor Herbert, Night of Opera is guaranteed to be an evening filled with laughter and love.
The night also brings an old friend back to Statesboro’s stage with the return of Dr. Tamara Watson-Harper. Watson-Harper was the director of GSO from 2002-2006. “I think it is indicative of the quality of our program and its students that we have alumni and prior faculty return to perform,” says Gregory.
The performance ranges from large choruses to solo songs. Four scenes will be in a foreign language, but translations will be provided for the listener.
Admission is free, but donations will be accepted. For more information on the 5th Annual Night of Opera, please contact the Averitt Center for the Arts at (912) 212-ARTS (2787).
